International research and training workshop- “Central European Fragment Research Group. Pre-Gothic Literacies & Communities”

The history of communities also survives in fragments of medieval manuscripts scattered across libraries, archives, and museums. These fragments offer valuable insights into written culture, knowledge circulation, and the connections between communities across medieval Europe.

From 15 to 19 October, researchers and heritage professionals from across Europe will meet in Sibiu, Romania, for “Central European Fragment Research Group. Pre-Gothic Literacies & Communities”, an international research and training workshop organised within the RESTORY project.

Hosted by the Brukenthal National Museum, the workshop combines research presentations, hands-on exploration of medieval manuscripts, study visits, and discussions on future cooperation. Participants will exchange methods and experiences in identifying, researching, and interpreting manuscript fragments from different European collections. By strengthening heritage professionals’ expertise and connecting research across institutions and countries, the workshop can deepen understanding of how medieval communities created, preserved, and shared knowledge, bringing this heritage closer to today’s communities.

The workshop is organised as a collaboration among Babeș-Bolyai University, the Brukenthal National Museum, the “George Barițiu” Institute of History of the Romanian Academy, the Teutsch Haus – Friedrich Teutsch Centre for Dialogue and Culture, and the Sibiu County Service of the National Archives.
